What Is Economy Rate?
Economy rate measures exactly one thing: how many runs a bowler gives away, on average, for every over they bowl. It's the bowling equivalent of asking how tight someone's control is, stripped of any reference to wickets — a bowler can have an excellent economy rate in a spell where they didn't take a single wicket, simply by not letting the batting side score freely.
It's most useful in limited-overs cricket, where every run saved directly affects the chase or the total being defended. In Test cricket the number still gets tracked, but it takes a back seat to wickets and pressure-building, since containing runs matters far less when there's no over limit forcing the batting side to take risks.
It's also one of the few bowling numbers that stays meaningful even in a spell with no wickets at all. A bowler can go through an entire innings without a breakthrough and still be rated as the most effective on the day, purely because they kept the scoring rate down and forced the batting side to take risks against everyone else instead.

Divide the total runs a bowler has conceded by the number of overs they've bowled. Because cricket overs are recorded in overs-and-balls notation rather than decimals, a spell of 9.4 overs needs to be converted to its actual decimal value (9.667) before the division works correctly.
Why It Matters
Economy rate only means something once you know which part of the innings it was bowled in. Going for under 4 runs an over through the middle of an ODI innings is genuinely tight bowling, but a death-overs specialist conceding 9 an over in the final few overs of a T20 innings might still have bowled the pick of the attack that day, simply because everyone else went for more against batters swinging freely.
It's also one of the clearest signals of a captain's confidence in a bowler. Economical bowlers are the ones trusted with the tightest, highest-pressure overs — the last over of a run chase, or the over right after a flurry of boundaries — because containing runs in those moments can matter more than the wicket column.
Over a whole career, a consistently low economy rate tends to say more about a bowler's discipline and variations than raw pace ever could.
